Kilimanjaro International Airport, located between the cities of Arusha and Moshi, approximately 50 km south-west from the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa (5895 m), an extinct stratovolcano located in northeastern Tanzania, near the cities of Arusha and Moshi. The highest point of the mountain is Uhuru peak (5895 m). The peak was first conquered by Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtsheller in 1889. There are two more peaks, also extinct volcanoes: Mawenzi (5149 m, the third highest peak in Africa after Uhuru and the mountains of Kenya) and Shira (3962 m). Climbing Kilimanjaro is carried out on such popular routes: Marangu, Lemosho, Machame, Rongai, Umbre, Shira, Mweka and new Northern Circuit Crater Route. The number of days for climbing, from 5 (normal) to 10 days. It depends on the state of the group, how much you are ready to go, distances from 5 to 12 km every day, time from 5 to 7 hours.

Mount Meru (4566 m), volcano – the second peak of Tanzania (after Kilimanjaro), is located in Arusha National Park, about 70 km south-west of Mount Kilimanjaro. Currently, the mountain consists of two peaks: the great Meru, which also bears the peak of Socialist (4566 m) and the small Meru (3820 m). Climbing Mount Meru (4566 m) – good training and acclimatization before climbing Mount Kilimanjaro (5895 m).

Since we are in the equatorial climate zone, there are two seasons: wet (the rainy season reigns tentatively in April-May and November) and dry for the rest of the year. Accordingly, the ascents are held from January to mid-March, from mid-June to October and from mid-December to January.

Guides, Rangers

Climbing Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak (5895 m). Shira Route, 7 days

About This Route

The Shira route starts from the control point – the Shire gate, which is located at a fairly high altitude – 3600 m. All tourist groups drive to this entrance by transport, and therefore, many tourists without sufficient acclimatization experience mountain sickness on the first day / night of ascent. This route, as a rule, is chosen only by trained climbers who have experience of climbing to a considerable height and quickly adapt to extreme conditions for the organism. It is also quite a long route on Kilimanjaro. It requires at least 6 overnight stays. Three of them pass, as a rule, in the conditions closest to the wild, that is, on this route, the greatest acquaintance with the primeval nature of these places is achieved. From the Shira hut (3840 m), this route almost repeats the route of Lemosho. Since then, the number of people on it exceeds the desired size. The descent takes place on the route Mweka.

Route of the Shira:

  • the route starts from a great height – 3600 m
  • recommended route for trained climbers with acclimatization
  • after crossing with the rest of the western routes, it is crowded in any season, which is one of its main disadvantages
  • A standard climbing time of 7 days is suggested.

Day 1: You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to Parkview In hotel/Kilimanjaro wonders Hotel or Weruweru River lodge in Moshi town, you will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Gear which is missing can be rented on this day. Overnight at your arranged Hotel. Hotel is Bed & Breakfast basis.

Day 2: Drive to Kilimanjaro National Park Shira Gate, Hike to Shira 2 Camp
The drive from Moshi to the trailhead takes about 3 hours. We hike through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. At lower elevations the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Shira Camp.

Elevation: 1830m/6000ft to 3850m/12,600ft / Distance: 8km/5mi / Hiking Time: 4-5 hours / Habitat: Montane Forest / Meals: LD / Budget Lodging: Shira 2 Camp

Day 3: Hike Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
From the Shira Plateau we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the "Shark’s Tooth" (elev 4650m/15,250ft). Shortly after the tower we come to the second junction which goes to the Arrow Glacier. We now continue down to the Barranco Camp. Although you end the day around the same elevation as when you began, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

Elevation: 3850m/12,600ft to 4000m/13,000ft / Distance: 10km/6mi / Walking Time: 5-6 hours / Habitat: Semi-desert / Meals: BLD / Budget Lodging: Barranco Camp

Day 4: Hike Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge up the Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley and the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail.

Elevation: 4000m/13,000ft to 4050m/13,250ft / Distance: 5km/3mi / Hiking Time: 34 hours / Habitat: Alpine Desert / Meals: BLD / Budget Lodging: Karanga Camp

Day 5: Hike Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
We continue up to the Barafu Camp. You have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day.

Elevation: 4050m/13,250ft to 4700m/15,350ft / Distance: 4km/2mi / Hiking Time: 3-4 hours / Habitat: Alpine Desert / Meals: BLD / Budget Lodging: Barafu Camp

Day 6: Hike Barafu Camp to Summit, down to Mweka Camp
Very early in the morning (midnight), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit. From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa!

From the summit we begin our descent by continuing straight down to the Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You may want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. We arrive at Mweka Camp and enjoy our last evening on the mountain.

Elevation: 4700m/15,350ft to 5895m/19,340ft / Down to 3090m/10,150ft / Distance: 5km/3mi up / 13km/8mi down / Hiking Time: 5-7 hours up / 5-6 hours down / Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit / Meals: BLD / Budget Lodging: Mweka Camp

Day 7: Hike Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, drive to Moshi
After breakfast we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

From the gate, continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 30 minutes).

Elevation: 3090m/10,150ft to 1680m/5500ft / Distance: 10km/6mi / Hiking Time: 3-4 hours / Habitat: Forest / Meals: Breakfast

SAMPLE FOOD ON KILIMANJARO (MERU)

The menu on Kilimanjaro (Meru) is designed to ensure your food intake matches your level of exertion. It will provide you with a good balance of protein, carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables.

When you are at altitude you could start to feel nauseous and your appetite may be suppressed, so the meals prepared at high altitude usually contain more carbohydrates and less protein to help you to digest your food.

Your meals will be prepared by your cooks on Kilimanjaro and the food will be carried by your porters.

A typical day’s menu will include the following:

Breakfast:

  • Porridge
  • Toast
  • Pancakes
  • Eggs
  • Smoked sausages
  • Fresh fruit (pineapple, melon or oranges)
  • Tea / Coffee / hot chocolate

Lunch:

  • Sandwiches
  • Fresh fruit
  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Biscuits
  • Fruit juice

Dinner:

  • Soup
  • Pasta / Rice / Potatoes
  • Chicken / Beef
  • Vegetables
  • Salad
  • Fresh fruit
  • Snacks

You may wish to bring your own snacks to provide a well deserved treat, or energy boost!

Chocolate is generally the best answer and if it has nuts in then even better, but whatever you choose make sure it is a favourite treat and not a ‘power bar’, or ‘energy gel’.

If you are suffering from altitude sickness then your appetite may be suppressed and these snacks may become a good supplement to your meals, so make sure it is something that you enjoy eating!

A powdered energy drink such as lucozade sport is also a good source of energy and will help with the taste of the water if you have been using iodine tablets.
