Day Trip – Kikuletwa Hot Springs Chemka Hot Springs IS IN Moshi, Tanzania
90minutes from Moshi, – Tanzania And 45 OR 1-HOUR from Arusha.

Rundugai Hot Water Springs or Kikuletwa Hot Springs or Chemka Hot Springs is an unexpected paradise hidden in the desert scrub outside of Boma town.

Situated about 35 km from Moshi, in the heart of the Sanya Plains, lie the Rundugai Springs. Locally called Chemka, meaning boiling, referring to the way the water appears to boil as it emerges from underground. In fact, the water is not hot rather it is a pleasant temperature! The springs’ water is from the Greatest African Mountain, Kilimanjaro.

It is an inviting place for a picnic and a swim too (don’t forget your swimwear). Get a relaxing pedicure from the fish and if lucky enough to camp at these springs, early in the morning you can see turtles swimming along. This crystal-clear, turquoise water is surrounded by palm and fig trees, winding roots offer a picturesque spot for a relaxing afternoon swim.

The spring is over 6 m deep in some places although you can see the bottom through the crystal clear waters no matter where you are. You can also wrap your arms around one of the roots and just let the water flow by as you drift off into a daydream listening to the monkeys squeaking and birds chipping in the trees.

You can have as much fun and relaxation as your heart desires, and that your body and mind needs.

  • Overview

The drive from Moshi to Kikuletwa Hot Springs, will start on paved road toward Moshi, before turning left onto gravel road about 90 minutes later. The road will take you through gorgeous African countryside past bush land, dry riverbeds, baobab and acacia trees among many others. This vast area, which used to be a hunting ground for Europeans during the 1800s, is home to members of many different tribes, peacefully co-existing as neighbors. Although the game has long since migrated, it is still a haven to many animal species, including a variety of birds.

When you reach Kikuletwa it will appear as an oasis surrounded by sprawling fig trees, in the middle of this semi arid landscape. You will see crystal clear water bubbling from underground caves, giving the impression that it is boiling, hence the name “Hot Springs”.

The water is perfectly refreshing and if you brought your bathing suit, this is your time to take a dip and relax in the shade of the trees.

After a picnic lunch we will start making our way back to Moshi via back gravel roads, taking you past the Kilavu river and sugar cane plantations about 30 minutes prior to arriving back in Moshi late Evening.

Tarangire National Park DayTrip

Day 1 Arusha – Tarangire National Park

We will collect you from your hotel in Arusha and following a 2-3 hour drive, you will arrive at the Tarangire National Park. In this region, Hemmingway often went on big game hunting safaris. After the formation of the national parks in 1970, they turned the seasonal marshes and the endless savannah that one sees today into, once again, profitable hunting grounds. Today however, cameras thankfully have replaced the elephant guns. The Tarangire National Park has the highest density of elephants in North Tanzania and you can view these animals all year round in which the herds often can reach an impressive number of 300 animals. The Tarangire River has water all year round and during the dry season, between July and October, many animals from the surrounding areas come to the river for drinking. If you visit the park during the dry season, you will witness an unforgettable natural wonder as you can observe wonderful creatures such as lions, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeests and zebras as well as various types of antelopes and gazelles and with a little luck, you can also spot a python! This area is during the dry season also a haven for bird watchers with over 550 different species including the Masai Ostrich -the world largest bird. Around lunchtime, you will stop at a suitable picnic place before the afternoon is dedicated to more wildlife watching. Before sunset, You will be taken back to your hotel in Arusha.
